Expert Tips To Keep In Mind Before Starting Fertility Treatment During The Pollution Season
Air pollution has become a cause for concern in Delhi and, for that matter, the rest of India. With rising pollution levels during winter, several couples planning fertility treatment remain undecided about the environmental factors affecting conception. While poor air quality affects respiratory health, recent studies indicate that it also affects reproductive health in both males and females.
High levels of pollution can affect reproductive health in both men and women. Here are some critical measures advised by the expert before beginning fertility treatment during months with poor air quality. We spoke to Dr Neha Tripathi, Fertility Specialist, Nova IVF Fertility, Indirapuram, who listed essential tips and start your fertility treatment without any difficulties.
"Polluted air contains harmful particles, toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and smoke that enter the bloodstream and may disturb hormones, egg quality, sperm quality, and overall fertility. For couples preparing to start In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), Intrauterine insemination (IUI), or any other assisted reproductive treatment, understanding how pollution affects fertility and how to take proper precautions is essential," explained Dr Tripathi.
How Pollution Affects Men and Women
For women:
- Affected ovarian reserve
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Poor egg quality
- Higher risk of implantation failure
For men:
- Lower sperm count
- Reduced motility
- Changes in sperm shape
- Disturbed testosterone levels
Essential Steps Before Starting Treatment
To ensure a safe and smooth fertility journey during high-pollution months, Dr. Tripathi recommends the following:
1. Get a Complete Medical Evaluation
Undergo key tests including:
- Hormonal profile
- AMH levels
- Semen analysis
- Thyroid function
- Vitamin levels
Pollution can worsen deficiencies, so early correction supports better outcomes.
2. Improve Your Indoor Air Quality
- Use an air purifier at home
- Wear a mask when stepping outdoors
- Stay indoors during high AQI days
- Choose light indoor exercises after consulting your specialist
3. Follow an Antioxidant-Rich Diet
"Foods like fruits, nuts, seeds, leafy vegetables, whole grains, and omega-3 sources help counter oxidative stress caused by pollution. Antioxidants can boost both egg and sperm quality," added Dr Tripathi.
4. Manage Stress, Sleep and Hydration
"Stress can disrupt hormones, so prioritise proper rest, relaxation techniques, and regular sleep cycles. Also, staying well-hydrated helps the body flush toxins more efficiently," advised Dr Tripathi.
5. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol
Smoking and pollution together do the most severe damage to reproductive cells. Quitting both significantly improves fertility outcomes.
Bottomline
Dr Tripathi concluded, "By taking these precautions seriously and preparing your body well, couples can begin their fertility treatment with greater confidence and better protection from pollution-related risks. A mindful approach today can make the journey toward parenthood safer and more effective."
